Run with Fired Up Fitness and Help Save the Gorillas
5/27/2011 10:35:27 AM

While we did not get into the 2011 Nike Women’s San Francisco Marathon/Half Marathon, we are still very eager to help you to achieve your running goals this year!  Join us to train for a local run and support the conservation efforts of the Calgary Zoo – all at the same time!

The Gorilla Run (Sunday, October 16, 2011) is a 16 K run which takes you initially through the Calgary Zoo and then along the beautiful city river pathway.  Don’t want to run a full 16K?  No problem – it can also be done as a relay with 2 or 3 people!  Achieve your goals with us to run a short, medium or longer distance in the Gorilla Run!

Train through Fired Up Fitness and have access to fitness professionals that will provide full support as you train for your first run or try to achieve a “personal best”:  Details of the program include:

  • Running program and up to 3 weekly group runs with highly regarded and experienced Calgary running coach, John Dumonceaux.
  • Discounted rate to Fired Up Fitness’ SPARC (Strength, Poise, Agility, Range of Motion, Cardio) fitness classes to round out your running program with functional cross training
  • Fired Up Fitness team dry-fit technical t-shirt
  • Fee:  $30 + a donation to the Calgary Zoo (note: this does not include the Gorilla Run registration fee; you will be responsible for the run entry fee at the time of registration).

Please let us know if you would like to join the Fired Up Fitness team and we will send all the details regarding training and race registration.  Registration is not a lottery – which means that entry to the run is guaranteed!  Get a relay team together or run the entire distance solo – either way you will benefit your own health as well as the efforts of the Calgary Zoo as they try to make a difference for endangered animals.

BMI - Food for Thought
5/28/2010 8:16:46 AM
Here is an interesting article regarding the use of BMI to determine whether a person is overweight or not (see below).

BMI is a calculation based on only two things: a person's height and their weight.  Did you know that when Arnold Schwarzenegger was at the height of his body building days his BMI calculation had him classified as obese!

Take a look at the article and determine for yourself how you want to measure your health.

Active Commute
5/20/2010 1:36:34 PM

Now that summer feels like it's just around the corner, why not think about fitting a workout into your commute to work?  When you take into account how much time you spend in traffic in rush hour, biking to work may often only add 10-15 minutes to your commute!
Live too far from work to bike all the way?  Did you know that there are 7 Park 'n' Bike lots located in calgary?  All are round 5-8 kilometers from downtown and are an ideal way for you to fit a run or bike into your morning commute.  Check out the
City of Calgary's website for more information on locations.

Recovery Drink

 MILK

According to research by Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, women who drank skim milk after exercise lost 3.5 lbs of fat in 12 weeks.  Those who opted for sports drinks ended up gaining weight.  Milk's protein improves the body's ability to burn calories and build muscle.  So I guess milk does "do the body good".

Quote of the Day!
4/12/2010 12:22:26 PM
"You know, once I was thinking of quitting when I was diagnosed with brain, lung and testicular cancer all at the same time. But with the love and support of my friends and family, I got back on the bike and won the Tour de France five times in a row. But I'm sure you have a good reason to quit."

-Lance Armstrong in the movie 'Dodgeball'
